Lock Every Door

I found myself connecting with Jules more than I expected. She’s not the perfect, glossy thriller heroine. She’s broke, heartbroken, and just trying to survive. That made her choices believable, even when they were questionable. Honestly, if I were offered a cushy paycheck to apartment-sit in a luxurious Manhattan building, I might have said yes too—and that’s what made this book hit harder. It plays on that universal fear: what are you willing to risk when you don’t have much left to lose?

The Bartholomew itself became a character for me—this gothic, menacing presence with its long halls, whispering residents, and secrets dripping from the walls. Every scene set inside felt claustrophobic, like the building itself was closing in on Jules. And the way Sager wove in real-world themes—wealth disparity, exploitation, and the ugly truths that hide behind polished facades—gave the story more weight than a typical thriller.

Was the final reveal a little wild? Yes. But for me, that was part of the ride. It didn’t need to be 100% realistic to work; it needed to be shocking, disturbing, and memorable, and it delivered on all three. I closed the book with that unsettled, jittery feeling I look for in horror-leaning thrillers.

For me, Lock Every Door was a strong 5-star read. It was atmospheric, unsettling, and more layered than I expected. It’s the kind of thriller that lingers after you’ve finished, making you think about desperation, power, and just how far people will go when survival is on the line.
