The Maidens

by Alex Michaelides

Rating
5.0

Mariana was such a compelling main character—flawed, grieving, but determined—and following her obsession with uncovering the truth kept me hooked. I especially loved how the book balanced psychological tension with a chillingly beautiful setting; it made me feel like I was right there in the university’s shadowy halls.

And that ending? It completely surprised me. Even if some readers find the twist divisive, I thought it fit the story’s unsettling tone perfectly. This is one of those books I couldn’t stop thinking about after I turned the last page. 5 Starts

Quotes

After all, everyone's entitled to be the hero of their own story. So I must be permitted to be the hero of mine. Even though I'm not. I'm the villain.
Reading about life was no preparation for living it.
That was the horror of it. We all secretly hope that tragedy will only ever happen to other people... sooner or later, it happens to you.
Don't glorify the events of your life and try to give them meaning. There is no meaning. Life means nothing. Death means nothing. But she didn't always think that way.
