What I loved most was the claustrophobic, unsettling atmosphere Freida McFadden created. The winter storm, the eerie couple, the creeping dread—you can practically feel the walls closing in. Tegan, the main character, was flawed and frustrating at times, but that only made her feel more real to me. And of course, in true McFadden fashion, the twists had me second-guessing everything.
This isn’t a light thriller—it’s dark, tense, and a little over-the-top in places, but in the best way. I had so much fun reading it and couldn’t put it down. For me, it was a 4 star, and it reminded me exactly why I keep coming back to Freida McFadden’s books: they’re fast, binge-worthy, and full of surprises.
Who Should Read It
- Fans of psychological thrillers where the protagonist is isolated and vulnerable
- Readers who like stories that explore motherhood, trauma, and power in relationships
- Anyone who enjoys twisty, so-dark-it's-almost uncomfortable suspense (think Misery-adjacent)
- People who don't mind some melodrama or characters making flawed decisions—it adds to the tension rather than detracting (for many)
- If you get uncomfortable with content around captivity, manipulation, or anxiety during pregnancy, just be aware—this story leans into those themes
